Man wins Powerball lottery prize — based on numbers from hole in one

The odds of witnessing a hole in one? Low. 

The odds of winning a lottery cash prize? Low. 

The chances of winning a lottery cash prize based on numbers from a hole in one seen on the day of the drawing?

Maybe impossible? Until recently. The winner is also doing business as one of the most fortunate folks alive. That saying of “you should buy a lottery ticket” after doing something rare? It actually worked. 

The news comes via the Maryland lottery website, and it was also shared through a story written by the Miami Herald’s Natalie Demaree. The winner’s actual name, according to the lottery website, was not given, but he’s from Calvert County, Maryland; the winning ticket, which paid $151,210, was purchased at Dunkirk Fastop in Calvert County; and the drawing, for the Powerball game, was held Dec. 21.

As for his numbers? According to the lottery website, he used 1, 17, 21 and 58 — and here’s where the hole in one comes into play. 

The 1 was for the hole in one that a member of the man’s group made on the day of the drawing. 

The 17 was for the hole number. 

The 21 was for the day of the hole in one. 

The 58 was a combination of cart numbers — the man’s group had used carts 5 and 8. 

According to the website, the man matched the four numbers, plus the Powerball number (which was not given by the website), to win $50,000, then won an additional $100,000 because of a “multiplier.” An additional $1,200 came by matching the four numbers (without the Powerball number) on four other lines of his ticket, and another $10 was won thanks to a “Double Play.” 

To end things here, there are two additional nuggets to share, via the website. 

Unsurprisingly, the man said he planned to buy new clubs with the winnings.  

And very surprisingly, the lottery win was his second.
